LONELY DRIFTER * THE O'JAYS * IMPERIAL 5976 * USA

The group have stated that as a bunch of sixteen year olds they only began performing just to hear the girls scream; as good a reason as any I would say. That was in the year 1958, five years later the excellent Lonely Drifter was their first chart single. Written by the group and produced by, one time member of the Dootones, H. B. Barnum, the song, very reminiscent of some earlier Drifters cuts, begins with the sound of seagulls and breaking waves (very much like the Tymes So Much In Love) which continues throughout the track.
