PAPA-OOM-MOW-MOW * THE RIVINGTONS * LIBERTY 55427 * USA
The Rivingtons: lead vocalist Carl White, tenor Al Frazier, baritone Sonny Harris, and bass singer Turner "Rocky" Wilson Jr.. Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow was the groups first release as The Rivingtons they had previously recorded as The Sharps. Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow is an up-tempo Soul song with a nonsensical, but musically poetical, Doo-wop chorus line that has been brought forward to become the title and the central lyric of the song.
Backed with the fabulous Soul ballad Deep Water, the record was a hit for the group who later had another hit with The Bird's The Word, a song in a similar style. It was these two songs: Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow and The Bird's The Word that were mashed up by the Minnesota-based group The Trashmen into a great Punk track Surfin Bird, that has recently been immortalised by Peter Griffin in the Fox TV comedy series Family Guy.
