1950
THE FAT MAN * FATS DOMINO * LIBERTY 15274 * UK
Antoine 'Fats' Domino's first ever record issued on the Imperial label # 5058, only the fifty eighth release on Lewis R. Chudd's legendary Californian independent. It was an instant hit and a solid start to one of the greatest R&B recording careers in history. Released in January 1950, by February it had reach number two on the R&B charts staying on them for nine solid weeks. The song was a collaboration between Fats Domino and trumpeter, band leader and all round music man Dave Bartholomew, the first of many successful writing and recording collaborations between the two men. The above British reissue from 1969 was the first release of the cut in the UK as a single, and unfortunately was not coupled with its original B side Detroit City Blues, which from what I have heard of his vast output is one of my all time Fats favourites.
