YOUR MOTHERS SON-IN-LAW * BILLIE HOLIDAY * COLUMBIA 786 * UK

On this release Billie Holiday's name is not mentioned, the credits are for Benny Goodman and His Orchestra (with vocal chorus), the next side Moon Glow is an instrumental. It was common at this time for vocals on record to only give the vocalist with a band either a casual mention somewhere on the label or not be named at all and as this was her debut recording it's not surprising that she get no mention. Billie Holiday was 'discovered' in 1933 by talent scout John Hammond who took her along to record  Your Mother's Son-In-Law with Goodman, recorded in New York, November 27, 1933, the recording featured Benny Goodman, Charlie Teagarden, Jack Teagarden, Art Karle, Joe Sullivan, Dick McDonough, Artie Bernstein and Gene Krupa. The song Your Mother's Son-In-Law was written by Alberta Nichols and Mann Holiner, and was featured in the musical review Blackbirds Of 1934 though not with Goodman or Holliday. The show opened in August 1934 at the London Coliseum and apart from the above included such immortal songs A Hundred Years From Today, Moonglow and Saint James' Infirmary.
