I always thought Alden Bunn's puzzling nickname 'Tarheel Slim' had something to do with his boots! In fact Tarheel refers to his home state North Carolina 'the Tarheel state'; although why that's called Tarheel only defers the enigma. The 'Slim' bit is just that: he wasn't fat. Judging by the photographs of her Anna Lee Sanford was 'Little' only coming up to the shoulders of her husband 'Tarheel Slim'. Also, going by the photo's, she looks like a real doll and, if it can be gauged from an image, a fabulous person, she certainly had a great voice. It was on these sides for Bobby Robinson's Fire label that the couple, previously known as 'The Lovers', first used these nicknames.
