Released in the US on the Atco label in August 1959 Poison Ivy was The Coasters eleventh record for the imprint, it went to the number 1 spot on the R&B charts, and number seven Pop; the record even sold well enough in the British Isles to peak at number 15 on the British 'Top Twenty' chart.
The song was covered by many groups and artists over subsequent years, even by the Native American group Redbone (see below).
