1965

DON-DE-LION * DON DRUMMOND AND THE SKATALITES * SKA BEAT 191 * UK

A Duke Reid production, issued on his Treasure Isle imprint in Jamaica. The Skatalites disbanded in 1965, the same year Don Drummond a.k.a. Don-De-Lion, Don Cosmic, was convicted of the murder of his lover, Margarita. He was sentenced to indefinite detention in a prison for the criminally insane, where in 1969 it was said that he had committed suicide, and while no official autopsy reports are unavailable the controversy of his death rumbles on; from the act of defiance when drummer Hugh Malcolm publicly tore up his death certificate at a memorial service in the trombonists honor, to this day.
