DRINKIN' WHISKY * LAUREL AITKEN WITH THE CARIBS * STARLIGHT 014 * UK

An R&B production Drinkin' Whiskey was released in the UK August 1960 and would have been virtually unknown outside of the small and localised West Indian communities in the big metropolises. Others who would have had the opportunity to hear this music would be predominantly: musicians, outlaws and  the adventurous young who ventured into the many underground black owned and run illicit clubs, drinking dives and Blues party's. In 1960 to most of those not from a West Indian culture this music would have sounded unconventional and exotic, the words, pronunciations and  phrases would have seemed at times unintelligible and/or charming. In reality the music was not that much different from other types of Western popular music, being something of a mixture of Swing, Country, R&B, Blues and so on, but like many innovations it did not just imitate any of these genres but had a creative honesty and invention of its own that made it different enough to have this heterogeneity {that is} intuitively understood when first heard. Of course this inability to sometimes comprehend what is new, especially in art and thought, is commonplace; the tragedy is some of these innovations never really become 'understood' for what they are, as what usually happens is the imitators and profiteers (vampires) of any given artistic or philosophical development will by necessity dilute its conceptual or theoretical contents to suit their own personal or intellectual needs and or commercial designs.
