PENNY REEL * LORD POWER AND CALYPSO QUINTET * KALYPSO 02 * UK

A wild and dynamic Mento / Calypso cut full of the creative energy that belongs to this early period in popular Jamaican music. Penny Reel was one of the first records to be released by Duke Reid on his Trojan label it was originally issued on the 78 rpm format, with both yellow and pink labels.

Penny Reel is an old folk song that goes way back in the history of the West Indies long before radio on the island of Jamaica songs like Iron Bar, Penny Reel, Night Food and Brown Skin Gal were played live by singers and musicians everywhere, and, like bible stories in Hollywood film narratives being retold in different film genres, those same songs were still being played with a Boogie Shuffle beat, a Ska beat, as Rock Steady and on into Reggae Rhythms.
