PAPA WAS A ROLLIN' STONE * THE TEMPTATIONS * TAMLA-MOTOWN 5135 * S
The Undisputed Truth released the original version of Papa Was A Rollin' Stone in may 1972, on Gordy 7117; the Temptations version was released four months later in September, on Gordy 7121 in the US, and on UK Tamla Motown # 839 in January 1973; I have no idea when this Spanish picture sleeve issue was released, probably around the time of the British issue. The group had had a string of successful records in the new Funky style under the direction of Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield, who had taken over song writing and production on The Temptations as far back as 1966, but a marked shift into the emerging Funky sound came in 1968 with the release of Cloud Nine. Five years later Papa Was A Rollin' Stone marked the high point in the union with the record which won the Grammy Award for Best R&B song of the year 1973.
