Recorded in Alabama with The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, Respect Yourself was the first really successful secular song by this primarily Gospel act, reaching #12 on the Pop chart and #2 R&B.
The Staple Singers termed it a 'message song', possibly this was a reflection of the serious nature of Gospel lyrics they had been singing since the late 1940s.
