A TEAR FOR THE GIRL * MARTHA & THE VANDELLAS * GORDY 7031 * USA

This record represented something of a break in the run of punchy high energy dance cuts the girls had been recording like Heatwave, Quicksand and Livewire, picked up again after this disc with the incredibly potent Dancing In The Street. A Tear For The Girl is a beautiful ballad that restrains itself throughout with Martha Reeves turning in a virtual solo performance and the Vandellas (so called female vandals) just providing some nice but distant and nondescript wailing in the background. Written by Eddie Holland it was released as the B side to In My Lonely Room in March 1964.
