1958
RAVE ON * BUDDY HOLLY * CORAL 72325 * UK
Released in the US in April 1958 and in the UK four months later this was the eleventh release from Buddy Holly / The Crickets. It was records like this, so adored by the youth of the day that were so problematic for some of the older generation at the time - just as much contemporary music is now for some those 1950s youth who are now 'the older generation' - yet Buddy Holly's un-intimidating, even studious appearance was at odds with the image created around the Rock and Roll mythology. And yet his music was as wild, defiant and rockin' as any Rock and Roller on a major label; like Mark E. Smith said "You don't have to be strange to be strange" or in Buddy Holly's case: You don't have to look like a rebel to be a Rock and Roller.
