Syl Johnson's musical career goes back to the 1950s when he played guitar backing such Blues luminaries as Magic Sam, Billy Boy Arnold, Junior Wells and The Howlin' Wolf. He debuted on record in 1959 for Federal, he then cut records for: Cha Cha, T. M. P., Zachron Tag Limited and Special Agent, before settling for a while at Howard Bedno and Peter Wright's Chicago based Twilight / Twinight labels. Different Strokes, a cut which later became famous for its 'break beats', was his second on the label.
