NOTHING CAN STOP ME * GENE CHANDLER * SOUL CITY 102 * UK
Gene Chandler never really reach the levels of recognition in the UK that he should have considering the fine Soul songs he cut like the above, despite the success he had with his initial release Duke Of Earl nothing like a hit came to him during the 1960s although his out put was high. Nothing Can Stop Me a wonderfully optimistic and inspiring record, should have done it for him - in fact it was released twice so popular was it with those who heard it played out - but even with this cut he never reached the tipping point and became a known artist by the general public. Nothing Can Stop Me was first issued in The USA on Constellation 149 ( his ninth for the label) and in the UK on the Stateside label # 425, but whether through poor sales, or the folk who bought it never parted with their copies, it was always a hard to find record (it took me years before a Stateside copy came my way) this may have prompted Dave Goodin at Soul City to reissue it, or maybe he just liked it enough to want to re-release it, whatever the reason it was re-released in 1968 in the original form with The Big Lie on the flip, and it was this issue that gave him his one entry to the British charts in June 1968 spending four weeks on them reaching number 41.
