KEEP ON PUSHING * THE IMPRESSIONS * HIS MASTERS VOICE 1317 * UK
Written by Curtis Mayfield and sung by Curtis Mayfield, Fred Cash and Sam Gooden, this splendid record represents, for me, a high point in Curtis Mayfield's contribution in the 'struggle' for equality. The song is a profound expression of all those qualities needed to fight oppression and its agencies: dignity, courage, hope, self awareness and self belief, knowledge of the past, the present and an idea of how things could be. Although the song's message applies to all controlled and oppressed people it would naturally have been seen as a civil rights song, but weather the struggle was against capitalism, the political Left, or Right, the security forces, religion, science, or oneself the song offers a real and concrete resource from which to gain alimentation and strength.
