MIDDLE EAST * ROLAND ALPHONSO * PYRAMID 6003 * UK

There are many references both literary and musically to middle Eastern music in West Indian music. It seems that in the Arab musical experience, the focus is tarab, a multifaceted concept that has no exact equivalent in English and refers to the indigenous music and the ecstasy associated with it. The music is played on the 'ud, tablah, qannun, nay, mijwiz, buzuq and the daff, and it is the same distinctive sound that is heard in every Arab country, a music which historically is influenced by the Egyptians, Assyrians, and Sumerians. Although the above record was issued in the UK in 1967, I think it might just be a cut that had been laying about in Leslie Kong's studio and released on this B side.
