HURRICANE HATTY * JIMMY CLIFF * ISLAND 012 * UK
Great sound of early Jamaican music with the beat rocking back and forth while Jimmy Cliff sings, in the gentlest way, about his actions being like Hurricane Hatty (sic), interspersed with some exquisite instrumental breaks.
Produced by Leslie Kong for his nascent Beverly's label, Hurricane Hatty was Jimmy Cliff's first on the label and a hit in Jamaica, and his first release in the UK.
The B side, Dearest Beverly, is a song that the young Jimmy Cliff (born James Chambers, in 1948) wrote in the hope of ingratiating himself with Leslie Kong for an opportunity to record.
Hurricane Hattie was the deadliest tropical cyclone of the 1961 Atlantic hurricane season, and although it never actually hit the island of Jamaica it was at one time headed straight for it with winds reaching 160 MPH.
