Detroit born Mary Wells had intended to become a song writer she wrote Bye Bye Baby  for Jackie Wilson but after auditioning it to Berry Gordy who persuaded her to record it herself. Recorded on a one track system in February 1961 it became her first single for Motown and proved to be a lasting hit, staying on the US charts for over a year. Mary Wells also had the first Motown album, released in August 1961: Bye Bye Baby, Motown # 600.
