She was born Flora Yvonne Coleman, in Richmond, Virginia, 1942, and died in Las Vegas in 1994. If I Knew was her debut recording and although it has the early sixties James Brown sound, reminiscent of Anna King's recordings, her powerful vocal delivery marks the song out as her own.
