LOVE (MAKES ME DO FOOLISH THINGS) * MARTHA & THE VANDELLAS * GORDY 7045 * USA

Another B side that differs enough to rate separation in my collection, from the more poppy 'Motown' sounding A side: You've Been In Love To Long. On this recording Martha Reeves turns in, what is in effect, another solo performance, as the backing from the Vandellas, nice as it is, as on A Tear For The Girl, is ethereal and distant. Written by Holland Dozier and Holland and produced by Holland & Dozier this beautiful ballad with it's bitter sweet moral that includes lines like "love, love' love. the sadness it brings" suits the slightly anguished note I often hear in Martha Reeves voice.

It was covered by Slim Smith and Paulette in 1969 and like its American antecedent was also released as a B side; the only difference is Slim Smith credits the song to himself!
