SOLOMON BURKE 1940 * 2010
James Solomon McDonald aka Solomon Burke first sang gospel with The Gospel Cavaliers in the early 1950s, he recorded his first record Christmas Presents From Heaven for his mother on Apollo 485 in 1955. He had twelve records released while at Apollo, two under the name of Little Vincent. He cut three more records, two on Singular and one on Mala, before moving to Atlantic in 1961; his first for Atlantic was Keep The Magic Working. He stayed with Atlantic until 1968 before moving to Bell then MGM, after cutting one for ABC, he recorded four for Chess in 1975/6. Apart from his enduring legacy in music Solomon Burke leaves a human legacy of 21 children (14 daughters and 7 sons), 90 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
