1969
FANCY MAKEUP * JOHN HOLT * STUDIO 1 * JA
The distinctive Studio 1 sound on this Early Reggae cut, seen here on a latter re-press with a Version on the next side. A Version on the flip is a sure fire way of telling a repress from an original on 99% of Jamaican records that were originally released before 1970. Although instrumental cuts were used sporadically in the 1960s as B sides to the vocal, they were never referred to as 'Versions'. If it has not already been established it would be interesting to know when the word was first used. The frustrating thing with repress' for me is not the Version in place of what would have invariably been a different recording, as many Versions can be better than the first cut, but knowing if it has been remixed or not.
