HEAT WAVE * MARTHA & THE VANDELLAS * STATESIDE 228 * UK

More Tamla Motown at its dancingist best, Heat Wave was the first of a triumvirate of exemplary dance records from Martha and the girls - Heat Wave, Quicksand and Dancing In The Street - that set the pace for the jivers (mostly girls) in the big Mecca ballrooms across London and the South East in the early days of the Mod movement.

A phenomenal success in the USA the record gave the girls their first million seller, it was originally released in the US on Gordy In July 1963 (see below), and was the first British Stateside release of Tamla recordings, in October that same year. Late in 1963 Motown issued an album titled Heat Wave (The Vandellas second LP) composed of 'cover versions' of popular hits of the day to cash-in on the success of the single.
