Another arbitrary classification of my own on this page, while Rastafari speaks for itself, 'Roots Spirituals' are not regular Gospel, but Roots songs that contain religious affections, or just a spiritual dimension [that is they seem to be addressing more than just the mundane or temporal]. 'Didactic' is meant to represent all those records that contain practical and moral advice, of which there are plenty. There are many other classifications used elsewhere to categorize this music like, earth music, heavy, or conscious sounds, etc.,.
Up until the 1980s many from the working class received a somewhat different academic education from those of a middle, or upper, class background, this was due in part to parental help and encouragement, as well as peer pressure, but mostly it was to do with the system itself, so it was that many young men and women left school with an education that was of little use except to manage the simplest and most mundane of jobs, and their critical faculties left in a fairly un-troubled state. Some from that same underprivileged background who have, for whatever reason, 'broken the mold' and acquired an education, or enough of one, to realize the potential in an education, or the value of knowledge, to try to pass on their own educational benefits and intellectual reasoning's in the form of a didactic song. While to others the wit and reasoning in these 'didactic' songs might sound trite or banal, the singer will know first hand that many of their listeners may not see it that way.
