RESPECTABLE * THE ISLEY BROTHERS * RCA 1172 * UK
In my mind I always associate the early Isley Brothers with the Kray twins! I think this is due to that photo of them on the Twist and Shout LP, on which with their pork pie hats and tight mohair suits they look well smart and like they could handle themselves. Respectable was the groups third for RCA in the US, it was backed with Without A Song, but on this British issue it is backed with I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door the A side of their debut for the label in America. The song is a stunning fast paced belter in the style of Shout, and though it was recorded in the 1950s it is very much a 1960s sound, and was covered by Jimmy Soul & The Chants in 1963.
