MERCY MERCY ME (THE ECOLOGY) * MARVIN GAYE * TAMLA MOTOWN 802 * UK

Taken from his landmark album What's Going On this the third in a magnificent quartet of singles. Mercy Mercy Me the last track on side one, was a stunning epilogue to what had been, in the context of Soul music, an incredibly moving sixteen minuets of sociopolitical commentary. the album took most Soul music fans completely unawares, as although there had been many thoughtful, reflective and critical songs in the Soul music genre before none had been so sensibly structured and presented in such an integral way.
