I'M READY FOR LOVE * MARTHA AND THE VANDELLAS * TAMLA MOTOWN 582 * UK
Although the Motown publicity machine devised an elaborate story about the naming of the Vandellas, claming that it was Marvin Gaye who called them by this name because they acted like vandals in stealing the show when backing him on such records as Stubborn Kind Of Fellow, the offical story is a little more prosaic as it comes from an amalgam of Van, from Van Dyke Street, where Martha Reeves' mother lived and Della a tribute to Della Reese. I'm Ready For Love the groups thirteenth record for the Gordy label was released in the US on Gordy 7056 in October 1966, and the UK one month latter; it is a classic Holland-Dozier-Holland composition that could well be about (in the language of the day) 'getting it on' which hits the ground running and builds throughout without ever reaching a climax.
