30 PIECES OF SILVER * PRINCE BUSTER * STATESIDE 335 * UK
Thirty pieces of silver was the price for which Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus, according to the Gospel of Matthew 26:15 in the Christian New Testament. In modern usage the term Thirty pieces of silver generally refers to the likes of politicians or artists 'selling out' their principles or ideals (as if half of them ever 'brought in' in the first place!). It is in this modern context that Prince Buster sings about 'Judas' Charmer (Lloyd Charmers?) as being a friend who has let him down.
30 Pieces Of Silver was released in the UK on three different labels: the above Stateside release and the Unity issue released in 1968 are the same cut, while the Blue Beat copy, released in 1964, is a different recording, but the same song.
