NOWHERE TO RUN * MARTHA AND THE VANDELLAS * TAMLAMOTOWN 502 * UK
Released in the US on Gordy 7039 in February 1965 (see below) and a month later in the UK as the second record on the newly launched Tamla Motown label. Martha And The Vandellas first for the Gordy label was I'll Have To Let Him Go in 1962; Nowhere To Run was their ninth on both sides of the Atlantic. The song, about a bitter-sweet relationship, was a favorite with American troops in the Vietnam war, and in recognition of that was included in the soundtrack of the film Good Morning Vietnam, and latterly in the computer game Battlefield Vietnam. Who could have predicted that journey in 1965, although just as extraordinary is Ivy Jo Hunter playing snow chains on the backing track.
